1986 was the second running of the Wellington 500, and it attracted a strong field with such drivers as Brock, Moffat, Johnson, Hulme and Grice. The race was expected to be between the newly homologated VK Commodore of Brock and Moffat, the TWR Rover of Walkinshaw and Percy and the Volvo 240T of Francevic and Lindstrom. Pole went to Andy Rouse in his BTCC winning Sierra, but the car was not expected to last the race distance. The JohnsonCrichton pairing qualified a respectable 4th position in their Ford Mustang, now painted black and gold. Off the starting line Francevic stormed to the lead, with Brock close behind, pole sitter Rouse had early troubles and retired. The Volvo would lead for the first 13rd of the race, before retiring, promoting Brock to first place, with Hulme in second. Wet weather arrived
